Three Islamic clerics abducted while travelling to attend a prayer session for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election have regained their freedom after nearly two months in captivity.
The clerics were among six worshippers reportedly kidnapped by bandits on September 12, 2026, while travelling from the Dakko-Damari feeder road in Bakura Local Government Area to Talata Mafara Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
The prayer session was organised by Senator Abdulaziz Yari, Director-General of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council, at his residence in Talata Mafara. The gathering was reportedly intended to pray for the success of Tinubu’s second-term bid.
Zamfara State Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Bello, confirmed the release of the three clerics while briefing journalists at the state police command headquarters.
The rescue operation involved the police, the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA).
However, three other clerics abducted in the same incident are still being held by their captors, according to the police commissioner, who provided details of ongoing efforts to secure their release.
The Zamfara State Police Command reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property across the state and urged residents to provide timely and credible information to security agencies to help track bandits and other criminal groups.
