The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council, has commenced activities marking its 60th anniversary with a thanksgiving service at Victory International Church, Wonder City, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
The service, held on Sunday, November 1, 2026, attracted journalists from across the state, led by the council’s Chairman, Mr Akeem Abas, alongside members of the State Executive Council, chapel leaders and executives of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ).
Preaching on the theme, “The Story and Glory”, the Founder and Presiding Bishop of Victory International Church, Bishop Taiwo Adelakun, shared experiences from his personal and ministerial journey, highlighting the struggles and challenges that preceded his achievements.
The cleric, who reflected on different phases of life he and his wife had experienced, emphasised the need to remain grateful to God regardless of prevailing circumstances.
He urged the congregation to remain steadfast, focused and persistent in the face of challenges, warning against discouragement and stagnation.
Adelakun said people should not give up on themselves because of difficult circumstances, noting that every stage of life had its appointed time for fulfilment.
He added that although people might not always understand the timing of events in their lives, God makes everything beautiful in its time.
The bishop also encouraged the congregation to maintain their faith, exercise patience and remain appreciative of God’s goodness throughout their journeys.
A significant milestone – NUJ Abas
In his remarks, Abas described the 60th anniversary as a significant milestone in the history of the union, noting that the Oyo State Council was the first NUJ state council to be established in Nigeria.
He said the anniversary offered an opportunity to reflect on the council’s contributions to journalism and its commitment to professionalism, ethical conduct and adherence to legal standards in the practice of the profession.
The NUJ chairman also thanked God for protecting journalists in the state and prayed for continued guidance, wisdom and protection for members of the union.
The thanksgiving service marked the beginning of activities lined up to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of the NUJ, Oyo State Council, commemorating six decades of journalism practice, institutional growth and service to society.
