Millions of poor Nigerians facing rising food prices and the increasing cost of basic necessities are set to receive monthly financial support of N50,000 under a new Federal Government relief programme.
The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr Bernard Doro, announced the commencement of the National Emergency Relief and Stabilisation Intervention (NERSI) in a statement issued on Friday in Abuja.
According to Channels Television, Doro said the initiative was introduced to provide immediate financial assistance to households struggling with the pressure of rising living costs, driven partly by global food inflation and higher prices of essential goods.
N50,000 cash support
Under the programme, eligible beneficiaries will receive N50,000 every month to help them meet basic household needs and reduce the financial strain on their families.
The minister said the intervention would be reviewed periodically to reflect changes in the cost of living, adding that beneficiaries would be informed directly before any adjustment to the payment.
He explained that the ministry was working with licensed digital financial service providers to ensure that payments were delivered securely, promptly and transparently.
Doro said beneficiaries would receive text messages from the service providers seeking their consent before the money was paid directly into their bank accounts or mobile wallets.
He stressed that Nigerians would not need to apply, pay any fee or register through agents to benefit from the programme.
The minister also warned against fraudsters seeking to exploit the intervention, urging Nigerians not to disclose their personal identification numbers (PINs) or Bank Verification Numbers (BVNs) to anyone.
He advised anyone uncertain about a message or approached for payment to contact the official NERSI helpline on 0700-022-2222.
Doro said the intervention would complement existing Federal Government social protection and economic support programmes, while helping households cope with economic pressures and maintain financial stability.
He added that the programme was part of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, assuring that the ministry would implement it with dignity, transparency and accountability.
