Football transfers are often celebrated as the beginning of new dreams. For Emiliano Sala, however, one transfer became the beginning of a tragedy.
Emiliano Sala of 1990
Born on October 31, 1990, the Argentine striker would have turned 36 today. He died aged 28 when the aircraft carrying him from France to Cardiff crashed into the English Channel on January 21, 2019.
Sala had completed a reported £15 million transfer from FC Nantes to Cardiff City two days earlier. He was travelling to join his new teammates and prepare for life in the English Premier League. Tragically, he never made a competitive appearance for Cardiff.
But Nantes did not forget their former striker.
Following confirmation of his death, the French club announced plans to honour him by retiring his No. 9 shirt. In their first match after he went missing, Nantes players wore shirts bearing his name, supporters displayed emotional tributes, and the stadium observed a minute’s applause in his honour.
Four years later, Nantes released a nine-minute tribute video remembering Sala and the emotional scenes surrounding his loss.
His story remains a heartbreaking reminder that behind every football transfer is a human being with dreams, ambitions and loved ones waiting for his return.
Emiliano Sala never got the chance to fulfil his Premier League dream, but he remains remembered by the club and supporters who cherished him.
