The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has taken former Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, into custody over allegations of massive financial misconduct.

Sources familiar with the matter disclosed that Tambuwal, who also once served as Speaker of the House of Representatives, is being investigated for suspicious cash withdrawals amounting to ₦189 billion.

The transactions are believed to contravene provisions of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

A reliable insider revealed that the former governor arrived at the EFCC’s Abuja headquarters at about 11:30 a.m., where he was grilled by investigators over the alleged breaches.

“The magnitude of the withdrawals and the manner in which they were conducted raised serious red flags,” the source said, adding that the agency is determined to unravel the full extent of the financial dealings.

Efforts to obtain an official statement from the EFCC were unsuccessful, as its spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, declined to comment on the case.

Tambuwal’s detention marks one of the most high-profile anti-corruption investigations in recent months, further spotlighting the EFCC’s intensified crackdown on financial crimes involving political figures.
