The Oyo State Government has signed a new Urban Sanitation Policy Framework aimed at improving sanitation and hygiene services and promoting clean, healthy and well-managed urban settlements across the state.
The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Ademola Aderinto, disclosed this in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, on Sunday, November 1, 2026.
Aderinto said the policy was designed to address gaps in urban sanitation and hygiene services by providing a clear regulatory and institutional framework for effective implementation.
He explained that the framework aligns with existing laws and policies, including the Oyo State Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Policy, the Oyo State Environmental Sanitation and Waste Control Regulations, 2013, the National Environmental Health Practice Regulations, 2024, the Public Health Law, 2000, as amended, and the Oyo State Solid Waste Management Authority Law, 2004.
The commissioner said the policy also provides for the establishment of a State Urban Sanitation Steering Committee to coordinate its implementation.
The committee will be chaired by the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, with membership drawn from other commissioners, cabinet members and relevant ministries, departments and agencies.
Aderinto added that the framework would introduce a Young Professionals Programme to encourage youth participation and integrate young professionals into the state’s urban water, sanitation and hygiene initiatives.
He said the government was committed to taking a leading role in urban sanitation and achieving Open Defecation-Free (ODF) status across all local government areas.
According to him, two local government areas, Egbeda and Ona-Ara, had attained ODF status within the year.
The commissioner expressed optimism that the newly signed policy would accelerate efforts to extend the status to other local government areas and improve sanitation and public health conditions across the state.
