The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, as a public holiday in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday.

The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the announcement on Monday following the approval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The declaration is part of the ongoing seven-day national mourning period earlier announced by the presidency.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo described the holiday as a symbolic gesture to recognise Buhari’s lifetime of service to Nigeria, both as a military and civilian leader. He noted that the former president’s contributions to national unity, democratic growth, and governance left a lasting legacy.

“President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation,” the Minister said.

“This public holiday provides an opportunity for all Nigerians to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he upheld.”

Citizens were urged to use the day to promote peace, patriotism, and unity, values the late president strongly advocated throughout his public life.

The government also reminded the public that national flags are to be flown at half-mast throughout the seven-day mourning period, which began on Sunday, July 13.

In its message of condolence, the Federal Government extended sympathy to Buhari’s family, the people of Katsina State, and Nigerians at large, praying for the peaceful repose of his soul.
