Mexico Finally Approves Reno Omokri as Nigeria’s Ambassador

Mexico has formally approved Reno Omokri’s appointment as Nigeria’s ambassador to the country, clearing a major hurdle in his diplomatic posting after months of waiting for the host government’s consent.

Omokri announced the development on Tuesday after Mexico’s diplomatic representative in Abuja delivered the official approval to Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The approval, known as agrément, also covers his diplomatic accreditation to Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua, allowing him to represent Nigeria in all four countries.

In a statement shared on X, Omokri expressed gratitude over the development and confirmed that the Mexican government had accepted his nomination as Nigeria’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary.

He disclosed that José Manuel Briseño Flores, Chargé d’Affaires of the Mexican Embassy in Abuja, presented the diplomatic approval to Ambassador Babagana Wakil, Director of Protocol at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The development ends months of uncertainty surrounding Omokri’s posting, which had remained pending while Nigeria awaited formal approval from the Mexican government.

President Bola Tinubu nominated Omokri for an ambassadorial position in November 2025, alongside several other candidates, including former Aviation Minister Femi Fani-Kayode and former Independent National Electoral Commission Chairman Mahmood Yakubu.

The Senate subsequently confirmed the nominees in December 2025. Tinubu later approved the deployment of 65 ambassadors-designate and high commissioners to their respective countries on March 6, 2026, with Omokri assigned to Mexico City.

However, his appointment could not proceed to full diplomatic implementation until Mexico granted the required consent.

In August, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs identified Mexico and Japan among the countries that had yet to communicate formal acceptance of outstanding Nigerian ambassadorial appointments.

The ministry said it was engaging the affected countries and expressed optimism that the diplomatic approvals would be secured.

Omokri had earlier rejected suggestions that Mexico had turned down his nomination.

During an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today in June, he attributed the delay to diplomatic procedures and preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which Mexico is co-hosting with the United States and Canada.

Agrément is a standard diplomatic requirement under which a receiving country formally agrees to accept another country’s proposed ambassador before the appointment can be completed.

Omokri previously served as a media aide to former President Goodluck Jonathan and later became known for his political commentary on Nigerian affairs.

With Mexico’s approval now secured, the remaining diplomatic arrangements can proceed towards his formal assumption of duties as Nigeria’s representative in the four countries.
