The victims were trapped in the inferno after a J5 bus loaded with bakery equipment crashed into a stationary trailer carrying synthetic materials, causing both vehicles to catch fire.

The accident occurred in front of the Afijio Local Government Area headquarters in Jobele, where firefighters battled the flames for several hours before bringing the situation under control.
The Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency, Dr Moroof Akinwande, confirmed the incident on Sunday, explaining that the agency received an emergency alert shortly after midnight.
According to him, the distress call reached the agency’s control room at 12:20 a.m., prompting the immediate deployment of a firefighting team led by PFS I Makinde Kunle.
Akinwande said firefighters arrived to find both vehicles engulfed in flames.
The bus, whose registration number was unknown, was carrying bakery machines when it struck the rear of the parked DAF trailer.
The fire service team subsequently launched an operation using chemical firefighting agents to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to nearby properties.
However, three people were recovered dead from the scene, while five others were rescued alive with minor injuries.
Akinwande attributed the crash to the bus driver losing control before colliding with the stationary trailer. He did not disclose the identities of the victims.
Following the incident, the fire service chief urged motorists to prioritise road safety and comply with traffic regulations to prevent avoidable accidents.
He also advised drivers to minimise night journeys where possible, warning that fatigue and falling asleep behind the wheel could lead to fatal collisions.
Furthermore, Akinwande encouraged residents and business owners to install fire extinguishers in their vehicles, homes and shops to ensure that emerging fires could be tackled before they spread.
The incident highlights the dangers associated with road collisions involving vehicles transporting combustible materials, particularly when fires spread before occupants can escape.
