Stop Sending Money to Struggling Relatives At Home – Obi Urges Nigerians Abroad

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has urged Nigerians living overseas to reconsider giving money to relatives back home, arguing that such assistance does little to tackle the underlying causes of poverty and economic hardship.
Obi made the appeal on Monday during an interaction with Nigerians in Manchester, United Kingdom, where he urged members of the diaspora to use their influence to promote political accountability and better governance in Nigeria.
The former Anambra State governor blamed the country’s economic difficulties on poor leadership, saying regular financial support from abroad might ease families’ immediate needs but would not resolve the problems keeping millions of Nigerians in hardship.
Addressing the gathering, Obi urged Nigerians in the UK to challenge relatives who repeatedly requested financial assistance and encourage them to demand better performance from elected officials.
He maintained that sustainable improvement in living conditions would require a change in leadership priorities, particularly in the management of public resources and the implementation of policies capable of creating economic opportunities.
Speaking about his tenure as Anambra governor, Obi defended his record on financial management, saying his administration placed emphasis on saving public funds and spending responsibly.
“I’m not saying I’m a saint, but I saved money. I’ve not seen one governor who has saved 10 per cent of what I saved. No governor has done it,” he said.
Obi urged Nigerians to approach the 2027 general election with seriousness, stressing the need to elect leaders with credible records and a commitment to reducing corruption, improving governance and addressing the country’s economic challenges.
