Vice President Kashim Shettima and Presidential Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, have touched down in London to retrieve the remains of Nigeria’s former leader, Muhammadu Buhari, who died on Sunday.
The high-level delegation, representing the Nigerian government, arrived in the UK on Monday morning, fulfilling President Bola Tinubu’s directive to ensure Buhari’s body is returned home for burial.
They were welcomed in London by Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Yusuf Tuggar, and Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, along with other key officials.
President Tinubu, who expressed sorrow over the loss, had on Sunday ordered national flags flown at half-mast and sent condolences to Buhari’s family.
The former president, aged 81, passed away in a London hospital at approximately 4:30 p.m. after battling a long-term illness.
Buhari, a native of Daura in Katsina State, governed Nigeria as a civilian president from 2015 to 2023. His earlier military rule spanned from January 1984 to August 1985.
