Professor Mahmood Yakubu has officially handed over the leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to May Agbamuche, who now serves as the Acting National Chairman of the electoral body.

Agbamuche, the most senior National Commissioner in INEC, assumed the role following Yakubu’s formal announcement during a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) held on Tuesday at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

Addressing officials during the handover, Yakubu commended the commissioners and directors for their support throughout his tenure and urged them to extend the same cooperation to Agbamuche.

“She is a seasoned commissioner with years of experience in the commission’s operations. I urge everyone to give her the necessary support as she leads INEC pending the appointment of a substantive chairman,” Yakubu said.

The transition marks a continuity in INEC’s leadership, ensuring that administrative and electoral activities proceed smoothly ahead of upcoming political events.

In her brief remarks, Agbamuche expressed appreciation for the confidence reposed in her, promising to uphold the commission’s integrity and maintain the standards set by her predecessor.

“Our focus remains on transparency, accountability, and credible elections. I will continue to build on the solid foundation laid by Professor Yakubu,” she assured.

The handover comes as INEC prepares for a series of off-cycle elections and begins early planning for the 2027 general elections.
