Ousted Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has insisted that Mojisola Meranda stepped down as Speaker during a peace meeting with leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.

Speaking on Politics Today on Channels Television, Obasa stated that Meranda openly announced her resignation during the gathering, which was held in Marina, Lagos.

“There was a meeting in Marina attended by all party leaders, and in that meeting, Meranda herself declared that she had stepped down, that she had resigned,” Obasa claimed.

His remarks followed concerns over the withdrawal of security details assigned to Meranda, while his own were reinstated. Addressing the issue, Obasa questioned why there was controversy over the security changes, stating, “When my security aides were withdrawn while I was away, without my knowledge or consent, did I complain?”

He further argued that once an official resigns, privileges such as security details are naturally revoked.

The crisis in the Lagos Assembly escalated on Thursday after Meranda’s security aides were withdrawn, sparking speculation about Obasa’s possible return to power. Shortly after, Obasa declared himself Speaker again, but a majority of lawmakers swiftly rejected his claim.

Despite the opposition, Obasa attempted to preside over a session with only four lawmakers in attendance out of the 40-member assembly.
