Makinde Bent on Bankrupting Oyo to Fund Elections – Alli Reacts to N100bn Loan

The Senator Sharafadeen Alli Campaign Organisation (SSACO) has accused Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde of attempting to bankrupt the state through a fresh N100 billion loan, alleging that the borrowing is driven by his 2027 political ambitions rather than genuine development.

The campaign organisation, in a statement by its Director of Media and Publicity, Bisi Oladele, condemned the approval of the loan by the Oyo State House of Assembly, describing it as fiscal irresponsibility that could mortgage the future of the state.

SSACO alleged that the borrowing was intended to finance the 2027 elections and sustain Makinde’s political ambitions as his administration approaches its final months.

“There is no doubt that the proposed borrowing was not driven by any genuine developmental consideration but by a desperate political agenda to finance the 2027 elections and sustain Governor Makinde’s increasingly uncertain political ambition,” the statement said.

The organisation further claimed that Makinde was determined to incur more debt despite having barely seven months left in office, arguing that the decision would leave the incoming administration with a heavier financial burden.

It also questioned the economic justification for the loan, alleging that the state was already grappling with substantial debt obligations and that the timing raised concerns about the government’s priorities.

SSACO further accused the governor of pursuing a succession agenda that it claimed was unlikely to succeed, insisting that neither his presidential ambition nor his preferred governorship candidate could be secured through borrowed funds.

“He cannot borrow his way into the presidency, neither can he borrow his preferred candidate into the Government House in Agodi. The people of Oyo State will determine their next governor through their votes, not through the financial desperation of an outgoing administration,” it said.

The campaign organisation also criticised the Assembly for approving the loan, accusing lawmakers of failing to subject the borrowing proposal to sufficient public scrutiny.

“The House of Assembly must understand that its constitutional responsibility is to protect the interests of the people, not merely to provide legislative cover for the financial excesses of the executive,” the statement added.

SSACO warned that legislative approval would not prevent the next administration from examining questionable financial commitments, saying any wrongdoing established through lawful scrutiny should attract accountability.

It also said the All Progressives Congress (APC) would resist any attempt to turn public borrowing into a financial war chest for partisan political activities.

“Governor Makinde may have seven months left in office, but he does not have the moral licence to commit future generations to unsustainable financial obligations merely to advance his political interests. His tenure will end, but the debts he accumulates could remain with our people for decades,” the organisation said.

The campaign organisation urged Makinde to abandon what it described as a reckless borrowing spree and ensure that he hands over a financially viable state in May 2027.

It warned that the people of Oyo State would not forgive any deliberate attempt to sacrifice their future for political ambitions.
