Students of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, have taken their protest against the renaming of the institution to the Oyo State Secretariat in Agodi, Ibadan, chanting, “OOPI we don’t want.”

Naija Metro News had earlier reported that students of the institution shut down academic activities by closing the school gates and blocking the Sango-Eleyele road to express their grievances in the early hours of Tuesday.

The protesters, armed with placards bearing various inscriptions such as “Our Name, Our Identity”, “Respect Our Legacy”, and “Say No to OOPI”, also blocked the entrance gate of the Oyo State Secretariat, temporarily halting activities within the premises. The atmosphere was tense but largely peaceful, as the students insisted their voices must be heard.

Recall that the Oyo State Governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, in his brief remarks at the interdenominational commendation service held for the late former governor, Omololu Olunloyo, at the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium, Ibadan, announced that the institution would henceforth be addressed as “Omololu Olunloyo Polytechnic, Ibadan.”

In an earlier reaction, students of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, through a statement signed by the Student Union Government President, Comrade Oladipupo Olamide, expressed their disapproval of the renaming, describing the decision as “unjustifiable and degrading.”
