Nigeria kept their 2026 FIFA World Cup dream alive on Saturday with a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Rwanda in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

The encounter, played at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, was tense from the start, with both sides knowing that Group C remains one of the tightest in African qualifying.

Tolu Arokodare emerged as the hero of the night, breaking the deadlock in the 51st minute after latching onto a low cross and slotting past Rwanda’s goalkeeper with composure.

The goal was enough to secure three vital points and push Nigeria closer to the top of the group.

The evening was not without its setbacks. Star striker Victor Osimhen was forced off in the first half after suffering what appeared to be an ankle injury.

He limped off around the 27th minute, leaving fans and teammates concerned about his availability for the remaining qualifiers.

Rwanda, who entered the fixture above Nigeria in the standings, struggled to create clear chances despite pressing hard in the closing minutes.

The loss dents their hopes of maintaining a qualifying spot, while Nigeria’s win breathes new life into their campaign.

Supporters in Uyo celebrated the victory, but many remained anxious about Osimhen’s condition.

Nigeria will now turn their attention to the next round of qualifiers, where every point will count as the race to North America 2026 intensifies.
