Salvation Ministries founder and pastor, David Ibiyeomie, has sparked controversy on social media after reportedly claiming that Adam was expelled from the Garden of Eden for touching what belonged to God in tithes.
Ibiyeomie made the assertion in a video shared on X, formerly Twitter, by a popular user, OurFaveOnlineDoc, who criticised the pastor’s interpretation of the biblical account.
In the video, the pastor was heard explaining that Adam’s offence was not eating an apple or committing adultery, but touching what he described as God’s tithe.
“What was Adam’s sin? Adam was sent out of Eden for touching the tithe. Adam didn’t eat apple. Adam didn’t commit adultery. Adam touched the tithe which belongs to God. Because Adam touched the tithe, God said to him, ‘please get out of here,’” he said.
The statement drew criticism from OurFaveOnlineDoc, who described the teaching as outrageous and heretical, arguing that the biblical account attributed Adam’s punishment to disobedience to God’s instruction.
He wrote, “And as outrageous and heretical as this statement is, there are still some brainwashed and delusional Christians in Nigeria who will try to rationalise this madness.”
The X user maintained that God’s instruction to Adam in the Garden of Eden concerned the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, not the payment of tithes.
Citing Genesis 2:16–17 and Genesis 3:6, he argued that Adam’s sin was eating the forbidden fruit in defiance of God’s command. He also referenced Romans 5:19, which speaks of the consequences of one man’s disobedience.
“There was no command about tithes to Adam in the Garden of Eden, so Adam could not break a law on tithes that didn’t exist,” OurFaveOnlineDoc stated.
The post also attracted differing interpretations from other users.
A X user, Tony Oladosu argued that the account of Adam and Eve should be understood through spiritual revelation, describing the story as a symbolic message about Christ, salvation and humanity’s relationship with God.
Another user, Tufboss, wrote, “Blindness is rejecting the truth you can see.”
